Review of Annihilation (2018) by Martin R — 30 Mar 2018
Annihilation is very good film with one serious flaw.
The film explores important questions of evolution and identity. Who are we and how do we change, both as individuals and as a species? How would life which evolved on two different worlds interact? I could even sense a faint resonance with Solaris by Tarkovsky (not the Hollywood mess). Strong performances, with Portman as lead, keep the viewer engaged.
The flaw is a completely irrelevant subplot centered on the Gyasi character. This was clearly added in an effort to molify those with a race-centric political agenda.
Despite this serious flaw, Annihilation is worth seeing.
