Review of Annihilation (2018) by Eric Z — 30 Sep 2018
Strengths: Poignant themes, captivating visuals, arresting scenes, subtle drama; Weaknesses: Choppy storyline. Annihilation is a film that will stick with you for quite awhile after you've seen it.
That is, as long as you're open to the journey, and as long as you're not the type that demands answers be laid out for you or someone who feels entitled to the director to tying up loose ends for you.
There are several scenes in the move that are simply mind boggling. Some are so because of their hauntingly beautiful imagery and others because of their chilling implications. This movie contains both one of the absolute creepiest scenes I've ever watched in a film and a completely unexpected climax sequence that I cannot describe.
Did I understand the character's motivations when I watched initially. Kinda. Are there unanswered questions at the end? Yup. Did the film leave me thinking deeply about the place of humanity in a vast and unknown unknowable universe? Absolutely.
What a great movie!
