Review of Annie Hall (1977) by Brandon Y — 18 Feb 2012
It was certainly interesting and funny, and I'm looking forward to more Woody Allen films. Although I don't require as much as most in terms to plot (I'm more interested in interesting characters and wit), I still thought this film was lacking, which is why I didn't give it 5 stars. It takes more than eccentric characters and funny lines to make a great film. (Anyway, there was really only one interesting character, Allen's. The rest were tedious, and tedious characters rarely make for a great picture.) Even though the lack of depth and meaning was partially the point (ie, most relationships are random and vapid), it made the film less effective for me.
That said, it was an entertaining movie, and Allen gets special props for his directing. His stylistic techniques (the direct address towards the camera, the cartoon segment, the split screen, etc) weren't the most creative or enthralling I've ever seen, but they were interesting to watch, and added to the quirky nature of the film. Overall, it was worth watching.
