Annie Hall is Allen's best romantic comedy to date. It shows the auteur vision of this truly sophisticated director, and marks one of his most personal creations. It's a stunningly three-dimensioal piece, with genuine performances and exceptional humor.

While it remains more joyful than some of his later works, it is as refreshing and intelligent as one would hope. While Allen on screen may not be as likable as the Allen on the other side of the camera, all of this is intended.

In the complex and nervous tale of neurotic love, filled with smart pop culture references, Allen is able to perfectly place his stand-up comedy habits. It's not hard to see why it received an Oscar for Best Picture.
