Review of Annie Hall (1977) by Carmela S — 03 Nov 2011
Woody Allen's Masterpiece. One of my favorite films of all time. When you come to watch a romantic comedy you'll basically know everything that can happen, every scenario has been copied by every filmmaker who dares to make a romcom.
Annie Hall is the original modern romantic comedy. You watch it to see how their relationship went to doom. How Alvy's characteristics the neurotic-egocentric-narcissitic-hypochondriac who never wants to belong to a group that would have someone like him for a member, did find his match and then prove that he really couldn't belong to that group.
We can see that as the whole movie progress Alvy was always Alvy and Annie Hall( played by wonderful DIANE KEATON) was the first to move on and see that this doesn't work for them, but that's what it's all about you know? Discovering a relationship unfold right before your eyes and not blaming yourself for your differences rather accepting it.
First time I watched this was 3 years ago and found it to be a migraine experience with an incredibly annoying self-obsessed character, but when you get through a certain kind of maturity it's inevitable that Annie Hall really is the movie about relationships.
A classic example of the Neurotic. In this movie, Woody Allen created a very unique character that can be comparable to Bogart's, Grant's, Stewart's and Tracy's on screen personas, that everyone who tries to be a Neurotic would obviously look like they were imitating Woody.
Diane Keaton's ditzy yet extremely lovable portrayal of a woman partly based on herself ( because as we know Woody Allen wrote this for her) inspired Woody Allen to make more films with amazing heroines.
Certainly you wouldn't appreciate it if you're as happy as hell with your love life or if you tend to hate neurotics, you can't watch this. Certainly not for everyone.
