Review of Annie (2014) by Orlando O — 27 Mar 2015
I have never seen any other versions of Annie, except knowing the story premise and the famous musical set that is annoyingly played but meant for families that enjoy the cute musical. Director Will Gluck does capture the optimistic and sweet Annie that takes everything and cherishes every moment possible, even if it is someone that is being rude or mistreating her. She never lets the insults get the control of her. This musical comedy family film adaptation is not as bad nor great, it was enjoyable but it has its plot clichés, annoying characters and a couple of fair musical numbers.
Quvenzhane Wallis plays the new version of Annie; her performance is overboard cheering and tries to make the audience fall in love with her character as the precious orphan. Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz both stuck out with dull performances. Foxx playing a germaphobe politician, running for mayor and to see his character from being that distant individual to being a father figure to Annie was barely noticeable. Cameron Diaz is the worst as Annie's foster homeowner. Diaz played an atrocious annoying character that tried to play for laughs. Rose Byrne was fair as Jamie Foxx's character assistant; it is nice to see her warming up to Annie and quite different seeing Byrne doing a musical piece.
Annie is a fair film, it may have that heart-warming feelings for others, or be atrocious if the audience compares it to the original work. This Annie film is forgettable, with a dull plot, characters and some fun moments.
