Review of Anna Karenina (2012) by Tom H — 07 Feb 2013
I never thought I'd see the day in which I did not like a movie with a screenplay written by Tom Stoppard, but here we are! Overloaded, over-designed and over-stylized, this version of Tolstoy's classic falls flat on its face.
The operetta-like playful production does not do the novel justice. It ridicules the social rules of a society capable of producing such a tragedy. The scathing social criticism by Tolstoy is gleefully ignored.
Stoppard's writing is lacking the nerdy/clever touch we've all grown to appreciate. One star for being consistently bad throughout. Will probably capture an Oscar for costumes.
