Review of Anna Karenina (2012) by Sydney Y — 10 Aug 2013
It's no easy task to translate a novel as complex as this one to the screen, without having it become just "meh". Wright succeeds in delivering a narrative that manages to capture both the main themes, some very significant scenes and relationships very well.
The striking mise-en-scene is very helpful here, and turns out to be very effective as an editing tool, too. I think theatre-play style helped abstract the narrative and allowed Wright to make it more efficient.
I think that was probably one of the reasons why the very intricate story retains so much of its nuance on this version. Well done!
