Review of Animal Kingdom (2010) by Alex C — 29 Mar 2011
John Huston would've liked this character study of low-lifes methodically ripping each other to pieces. No one in this film can help themselves. It reminded me of 'The Asphalt Jungle'. Everyone rightly lauds Jackie Weaver's performance as a mum who likes to snog younger men (especially if she's related) but it's Ben Mendelsohn as a strange Caligula/Jake La Motta hybrid, who absolutely tears up the hard boiled screen.
Yes it's depressing and maybe a tad long (for my liking) but bloody hell, it's a modern benchmark. I'm first in line for David Michod's next effort. Good man!
