Review of Animal Kingdom (2010) by Harsh C — 21 Jan 2015
A brilliant depiction of life inside an especially fucked up family. Interspersed with the unpredictable and fast-paced storyline are constant subtle clues demonstrating how deep-seated the problems in this family are, not least from the disturbingly calm manipulations and self-gratification of the matriarch.
The conflicting senses of belonging and menace should resonate with many people whose family is plagued by drug addiction or domestic violence, which is where the emphasis of this film differs dramatically from a typical gangland story.
One of the best films Harsh has seen in a long time.
