Review of Animal Crackers (1930) by David F — 21 Feb 2010
Hooray for Captain Spaulding! One of the earliest Marx Brothers films is one of the zaniest, in spite of its static stage direction. As with almost all Marx Bros. films, you should fast forward through the lame romantic subplot and corny songs and get right to Groucho, Chico and Harpo.
Best scene is the introduction of Groucho's Captain Geoffrey Spaulding - including the memorable 'Hello, I Must Be Going'. Groucho's peerless interlocution with the always reliably put-upon straight-woman Margaret Dumont approaches sheer poetry!
