Review of Animal (2014) by Justin A — 26 Jan 2016
It's not much better than some of the movies I've been watching, but it isn't as offensive because it doesn't try to be anything greater than it is. It's just a monster movie. It revels in its ineptitude, and so it's difficult to really dislike the movie. It is what it is. I will say the monster looks especially bad though. It makes sense why they shot it in the dark, hidden all the time.
And the ending is bizarre. The entire movie portrays one girl as the lead, but she kicks the bucket at the very end for the girl who seemed expendable and useless. Her character had the least amount of depth as everyone else, so it didn't even make sense why she lived. I guess because she was the white girl showing the most cleavage? I think they were trying to pull off a shocker, but if they were going to do that then they should have made the survivor more of an idiot who lucks out by surviving. Then it would actually be a shock. The way it was portrayed was just confusing and almost felt like they were just sticking 100% to the script, even though filming was taking it in a different direction.
Anyway, don't go out of your way, but it's free on Netflix. If you enjoy basic direct-to-video, cable TV monster movies, you may get some enjoyment out of this. It's not Dog Soldiers, but it's okay.
