Review of Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie (2014) by James R — 27 Apr 2018
I'm a huge fan of The Angry Video Game series on YouTube. I've watched every episode and I love James and Mike's dynamics. If you've never seen it basically James Rolfe the creator is in his "Nerd" persona a guy that plays old retro games and reviews the game explaining how shitty it is.
Rolfe has a background in film and has a lot of these passion projects that pay homage to horror and sci-fi films of the past. It's all very low budget but has a kind of charm to it. This time around he made an entire film exploring an adventure in the Nerd's life.
The Angry Video Game Nerd movie follows The Angry Video Game Nerd (James Rolfe) as he travels with his friend Cooper (Jeremy Suarez) to finally do a video on the E.T. Atari 2600 game. What starts out as an innocent video soon becomes a misadventure full of conspiracies involving actual aliens and Area 51.
The film is cheesy as hell, but thats kind of the point. It's definitely aimed at fans of the YouTube series. It's very low budget (all crowd funded) and it shows quite a bit. There's some great use of practical effects, but it sort of takes away from it at times.
I laughed a couple of times because I'm slightly biased, but theres a lot here that doesn't work. The movie is almost 2 hours long! This is about 30 minutes too long. The reason why the web series works so well is because it's just 10-20 minute long episodes.
The story here is absolute garbage with so many moments that should have been cut from the film. The movie took years to make and you can tell they probably went back to the drawing board a few times.
Overall, fans should definitely take a look anyone else steer clear.
