Yes, the subject matter is strikingly depressing, and no, there aren't that many happy moments in the film, but the film is beautiful, nonetheless. It does what it sets out to do, and it makes you think by the end of it.
The first time that I watched this movie, I didn't really like it. But it is definitely a "second time-viewing" movie. It makes you think about the lives of the characters, and just how good you have it in life.
