Review of Angela's Ashes (1999) by Anna Q — 16 Feb 2013
I read this book back in the 90's and was moved by its honesty and by the snapshot of early 20th century life in Ireland and the wave of Irish immigrants to America. We don't like comparing those immigrants to today's immigrants. But I'm glad they came, or I guess I would be writing this in Ireland right now.
The movie is bleakness punctuated with a few rays of sunlight and steeped in Guinness. But I was drawn to the story because of the narrative and my own family history.
It gets two Irish thumbs up.
PS no matter how bad things are in your life I promise these people had it worse. Maybe that's the reason I'm drawn to it. I always feel quite blessed after watching it. Emily Watson and Robert Carlisle are perfectly cast here. Great supporting cast.
