Review of Angel Heart (1987) by Shaun B — 07 Feb 2014
I remember seeing this when I was younger and more impressionable...it was a good movie back then. But today the view has changed and I find it worthwhile only to see Robert De Niro's take on the oldest villain in history (don't worry this isn't really a spoiler, b/c if you can't figure out what's going on in this movie in the first 10 minutes you have some serious issues).
Actually that's the main problem with the movie is that it is too obvious what is going on--the twist is given to you on a golden platter within the first few minutes and then we're subjected to a plot where Mickey Rourke bumbles around trying to figure out what is already too obvious even for a mildly retarded cocker spaniel.
The only reason this received 3 stars instead of 2.5 (or 2) is that there is a little confusion thrown in as to how Rourke's character is ultimately to be portrayed...it's a slightly open conclusion for you to interpret.
And the sex scene with Lisa Bonet was fairly fierce for a big budget affair by director Alan Parker (Pink Floyd's The Wall; Midnight Express).
