Review of And When Did You Last See Your Father? (2007) by Tom A — 16 Sep 2007
I'm not usually a fan of movies with what could be deemed sentimental themes, but I really enjoyed this one and it had me crying almost uncontrollably, which I never ever get from movies. In fact I felt slightly ashamed at the time looking around to hope that no one was noticing, which I guess captures the very crux of the awkwardness that exists in emotion between men.
This film touches one of the great taboos - the father, son relationship. All men should really go see this, as it really captures the awkwardness that exists in this relationship, how much goes unsaid and how much never really gets resolved between father and son.
It has an uplifting feel though in that it is never too late for reconciliation and personal resolution. Matthew Beard is a revelation and will soon become the next great young British actor. Yes there are some slightly weak scenes (notably the first one) and the music is slightly over-melodramatic at times, but this is a film that all men really should see.
It is time that tough men had a good old cry.
