Review of And When Did You Last See Your Father? (2007) by Tony A — 26 Sep 2007
Blake (Colin Firth) is struggling to deal with mixed emotions and painful memories as his father (Jim Broadbent) approaches death. Director, Anand Tucker's use of non-continuous time successfully represents the way that present day events can evoke snapshot memories of pivotel moments of the past.
He also managed to avoid being over sentimental by concentrating on the universal truths of relationships - the way that we rarely get to say the things we need to say at the right time. Almost any story about the death of a parent is likely to tug at the heart strings, but I must admit to welling-up on more than one occasion during the screening.
I felt a little better about having done so, when after the screening, Colin Firth admitted to crying like a baby when he first read the script! A fine example of low budget British movie-making. Go and see it - but don't expect to escape shedding a tear or two.
