Review of And When Did You Last See Your Father? (2007) by Mike M — 06 Oct 2007
Anand Tucker's adaptation of the Blake Morrison memoir proves a thoroughly decent little picture - a miniature, a madeleine, faintly unexciting as cinema, but better than average as a Sunday night television movie.
.. Broadbent and Firth's physical resemblance makes this father-son relationship very easy to buy, and Firth's weak-willed screen presence, in particular, provides a savvy shorthand approximation of a man who's been living in the shadows for most of his adult life.
Matthew Beard, as the agonised teenage Blake, is also good, and while the general thrust of the film is towards a demonising, and then a rehumanising, of a dad by his son, Tucker still finds room for a raft of terrific actresses: Juliet Stevenson, Claire Skinner and Gina McKee as members of the extended Morrison clan, Elaine Cassidy and Carey Mulligan as Blake's first loves.
