Review of And the Band Played On (1993) by Ashley G — 14 Oct 2007
Modine gives a moving performance as a CDC scientist at the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, grappling with a mystifying and deadly disease. Alan Alda provides a character you love to hate as the self-absorbed, celebrity researcher who is more interested in a Nobel prize than in saving lives.
This is, without a doubt, the very best made-for-cable movie I've ever seen. The title, by the way, is a reference to the band on the TITANIC, which continued to play as the ship sank, hoping to bring some peace to those who were about to die.
