Review of Anchors Aweigh (1945) by Matt D — 28 Aug 2017
The charming story of two sailors who just want to bang some chicks over their long weekend but end up falling in love with a waitress who never gets a name and a woman that they make out to be a whore in order to cut away the competition.
There are two really standout dance numbers here from Gene Kelly (the dance with Jerry the Mouse and the latin lover sequence) but everything else is honestly kind of a mess. The songs are forgettable, the plot is often ridiculous (or non-existent), and Kathyrn Grayson doesn't exactly have the acting chops for a leading lady role.
I had hoped for so much more from a film starring both Sinatra and Kelly but this one sinks on arrival.
