Review of Anatomy of a Murder (1959) by The M — 18 Mar 2008
I personally love this movie because Lee Remick was my favourite actress. In her first scene in this movie, sitting on the sofa and discussing how she was raped, smoking cigarettes and feeding her lapdog a saucer full of beer, it is easy to see why the studios intended for her to be the next Marilyn Monroe. She was beautiful and sexy and a damned fine actress. She did not become the next Monroe because the studio system took her more seriously than they did Monroe and gave her heavy parts in heady movies. She did have a great career and this is where it all started.
Preminger's courtroom drama is well loved by many but the truth is that some will find it draggy and boring. That's too bad for them because they will spend their time grumbling about being bored and completely miss performances by Mr Stewart, Ben Gazzara (who I believe to be Broadway's best male actor of all time), Misters O'Connell and Scott and MISS EVE ARDEN, who has the best one liners of anyone in the movies!
Whether a person likes the movie or not is going to be, solely, a personal matter. I say, give it a shot! What have you got to lose?
