Otto Preminger's courtroom drama ''Anatomy of a Murder'' takes a frank and unflinching look at a dramatic murder/rape case that was, at the time, shockingly blunt for 1950s audiences.

Preminger's direction is of the unintrusive sort, simply letting the actors, all of them giving fine performances, to tell the story, while eschewing with any stylistic temptations (except for Duke Ellington's confusing hot jazz score).
