Review of Anatomy of a Murder (1959) by Stephen E — 11 Dec 2012
"Anatomy of a Murder" is a great film because of how methodically and realistically it goes through the legal process, closing on a note that's so ironic and morbidly true that it'll send a shiver down your spine.
James Stewart leads an impressive cast comprised of Lee Remick, Arthur O'Connell, George C. Scott, Ben Gazzara and Douglas Brooks West, and each actor is supremely convincing in their portrayals. My only problem with "Anatomy of a Murder" is that the central mystery isn't all that mysterious and the way that the case is finally solved feels even less convincing, but even so, there's no doubting Otto Preminger's masterful craftsmanship and the resonant, relevant message that his film carries.
And hell, for having a running time that surpasses two and a half hours, it sure flies right on by.
