Review of Anamorph (2007) by Jason D — 09 Dec 2008
Anamorph is the story of a reclusive detective (Willem Dafoe in a really good role) who, 5 years ago, stopped (or did he?) the brutal Uncle Eddie serial killer who made artwork out of his murders. Now, a copycat killer is on the loose, using anamorphosis on his corpse artwork, which is a technique that makes the eyes see more than just one thing (very similar to those back covers of MAD magazine).
It's up to Dafoe's character, as well as partner Scott Speedman to try and track this killer down. The story is great, as are the very intricate deaths, which are, at times, pretty brutal. I'm surprised there aren't more people that like this film.
The movie also sports two of the most oddest cameos for a film like this: Deborah Harry (the singer of Blondie) in a blink-and-you'll-miss-her role as Dafoe's downstairs neighbor (maybe on the screen for 10 seconds), and Mick Foley (WWF wrestler Mankind/Dude Love/Cactus Jack) as a antique store dealer (another with about 10 seconds of screentime).
Odd. Oh well, though. Still, a very original and unique film.
