Review of An Unfinished Life (2005) by Chel F — 07 Nov 2007
If you are looking for a movie about forgiveness and redemption, this is your film. Einar (Robert Redford) forgives his daughter-in-law Jean for the car accident that killed his son a decade ago. Mitch (Morgan Freeman) forgives Einar for being drunk and not protecting him from a bear mauling. Heck, Mitch forgives the bear for mauling him. Einar and Jean learn to forgive themselves.
What is harder to forgive is the predictableness and slow pace of the plot. Yet even that can be forgiven because Jennifer Lopez, Robert Redford, Morgan Freeman and Becca Gardner all give fine performances (Bart the Bear, though, is a little over the top). British Columbia looks beautiful substituting for Wyoming. Robert Redford and Jennifer Lopez work surprisingly well together and the bond that develops between Einar and Griff and that endures between Einar and Mitch make you forget that this is a movie with few surprises.
