Review of An Officer and a Gentleman (1982) by Judith B — 03 Apr 2009
Stellar film. It's completely engrossing from beginning to end. It works best as a romance of course, but it also isn't bad as a military training/personal growth picture. The Navy's uniforms do just look better than any other service out there I guess.
They're certainly nicer looking than the Air Force uniforms. The final scene is superb. No dialogue is required when one has such a powerful visual and aural language in which to work. The freeze frame is derivative, but works nonetheless.
The obstacle course sequences bring back fond memories of my own military training. That was always my favorite part. I only wish we were able to do it as much as they do in the film. Gere and Winger make a great pair and are backed up by a strong supporting cast as well.
Great story and well told.
