One of the most inspirational films of all time, this classic character study/love story is one of the most realistic depictions of the U.S. military in the history of cinema. Producer Don Simpson even remade the film as a total commercial in the form of 1986's TOP GUN, complete with the lead character riding a motorcycle and a similar fate for the best friend in both films.
Richard Gere & Debra Winger are on fire throughout, particularly in their infamous sex scene which was threatened with an X-rating. Worth watching alone, however, for Gossett's Oscar-winning performance as Marine Sgt.
Foley and the wonderful ending, punctuated by Joe Cocker/Jennifer Warnes duet "Up Where We Belong" which also won an Oscar.
