Review of An Officer and a Gentleman (1982) by Jake C — 22 Apr 2018
A season of melodramatic soap opera squeezed into two well-crafted, efficient yet emotional hours. The nuanced performances ground these somewhat over-the-top characters and the straight-forward direction keeps the dramatic swells in check, with only a couple notable exceptions.
Things get a little too out of hand and pathetic whenever we leave the base, as if the real world is where the real dreaming happens, where we see the swings of passion, the fairybook ending set beside the nightmare mirror couple.
