Review of An Ideal Husband (1999) by Greg D — 05 Feb 2008
Oscar Wilde, as performed by some of Hollywood's very talented modern actors.
This movie is a story about a very well respected and very honorable politician (played by Jeremy Northam) in London in 1895 who with the help of his wife has soared to new heights of respect and popularity amongst those who are of the upper class. At the pinnacle of his success a woman with ties to his past arrives (played by Julianne Moore). Her presence may very well compromise his ability to continue his ascent into the upper eschelons of politics and social status, but how? What alleged scandal could exist in the life of such an upstanding public figure?
An Ideal Husband is very well written and very well acted, with a subtle, yet absolutely delightful comedic style. Despite its countless clever lines of dialogue it also has some real substance and is much more then just a collection of clever lines. This is a film that will bring a smile to your face and wrap you up in a magnificent story of scandal, blackmail, loyalty, true love, and friendship.
Keep your eyes peeled for Rupert Everett as a self-absorbed socialite who spends his whole life stealing the affections of women, stealing an adoring glance at himself in the mirror whenever possible and stealing the show with perhaps the best lines of the entire production.
The rest of the cast is top notch with outstanding performances including, Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore, Minnie Driver, and Jeremy Northam.
This is a movie for someone who wants a good laugh but can appreciate subtle and witty writing. This is truly an ideal movie.
