Review of An Evening with Kevin Smith (2002) by Guy S — 12 Jun 2007
Truly one of a kind. Kevin Smith's lecture circuit across the United States is quite frankly one of the most entertaining Q&A's you will ever witness. The structure is loosely based around a typical lecture room setting.
A college audience pitch the questions and Kevin replies with his smart ass responses. All out hilarity ensues. Much like his movies, his stories are punctuated with the frequent 'blowjob' and 'f***' jokes.
If there was something bad about this film I'd say the constant panning from stage to audience can be a little boring after an hour, and this is over 3 hours long! However visual style here is not important.
In fact at one point he is asked about changing or rather developing his movies' vista aesthetics, but he quite rightly replies with "to me how it looks is not important at all!". This is Kevin Smith, he's proud to be 'an amateur' and thats why we adore him! I won't criticise the primitive camerawork because it doesn't shift away from the main point and that is Kevin Smith and his outrageous stories.
If you ever wanted to know all the tidbits about his life and his inside facts on the 'biz this is definetely one to watch. How did he end up marrying his first one night stand? Could it be the zipper? Want to know why that Prince documentary didn't happen? Ever wondered why Superman Lives became one big catastrophe? Did Jason Mewes really get caught with heroin? Or how Kev' funded a film with, well no money? If you answered Yes to all of the above you definetely need to check this out pronto! Perfect entertainment for a boring evening! You don't have to be glued to the screen to enjoy it!
