Review of An Education (2009) by Aaron S — 18 Mar 2011
This was cute, creepy, funny, tragic, and uplifting. The wife and I really enjoyed it. The subject matter (a man of maybe 30 seducing a 16-year-old) is on the disturbing side, all the more so because it's based to some extent on a true story, but the film doesn't ask you to set aside your morals. It presents a colorful array of characters who all react to what happens in different ways. The cast is wonderful and young Carey Mulligan is a star in the making. The plot turns on what at first feels like a tired sitcom trope, but in retrospect it makes perfect sense.
The ending is on the neat side, but the film is so skillfully done in every other way that it's easy to let that slide.
