Review of An Education (2009) by Tom P — 01 May 2011
Usually, if I'm going to sit through a film about a woman coming of age I want to see a talking Cheshire cat (a la Alice) or an exploding womb (Carrie). Instead, in An Education we have a moderately predictable love story between a young girl and a roguish older man.
It's a rather quaint little movie set in West London during the Swinging 60s with our main female protagonist making the choice between the footloose path and the exhilaration of a relationship with our waggish older man and the rather more prosaic journey to success in the world of academia.
The tight Nick Hornby screenplay keeps the jokes coming, only occasionally getting stuck on boring girly stuff about feminist ambition and Chanel Number 5 perfume. As with most British films set in the 1960s I really got a sense of wishing I was around in that era: the cool clothes, fancy cars and groovy tunes.
You know, the Profumo affair and all that.... anyway, not a bad film at all, perhaps just a bit 'safe'. No tits.
