Review of An Education (2009) by Kevin L — 19 May 2011
Brilliant writing. Is this a touching coming-of-age story or a pedophiliac's love story? At best I don't think it is, at worst I'm not sure, and that probably means the script is layered and with nuance.
The title says it all, and it's true on MANY levels, by the end everyone has had an "education". I certainly see why Carey Mulligan got so much attention after this performance. There are not enough strong teenage female protagonists and this one jumps off the screen because of her performance.
However, if Nabokov's book "Lolita" made you uncomfortable, this probably isn't the movie for you.
