Review of An Education (2009) by Kyle A — 10 Oct 2011
I was blown away by "An Education", I really was. I've grown accustom to (and love) films with harsh realities and endings, but every once and awhile an ending such as the one in "An Education" fits the bill.
The morality and struggles of our leading lady Jenny (Carey Mulligan) are tested, and though we can guess at the basic plot trajectory, "An Education" is smart enough to wrap us in anyways. The performances, from Mulligan to the timid Cara Seymour (playing Jenny's mother), help get the trick done, but at the heart of it all "An Education" is just good old fashioned storytelling.
Human drama is the centerpiece, and when you have good drama you need nothing more (though every facet, from the aforementioned acting to the score, to the design, ect, in "An Education" is A+ material).
There's unheralded emotions to be brought out when diving into the complexities of human thought and freedom. "An Education" is a good representation of such power.
