Review of An American Werewolf in Paris (1997) by Caleb M — 10 Aug 2009
An utter disgrace to An American Werewolf in London, this dumbed down sequel sticks to condom jokes and cliche teen romance instead of the more inventive humor and mature relationships in the original. Tom Everett Scott has no acting ability. What would YOU do if some pretty French girl tried to shove you through a hole in the wall into a tunnel and told you to run for your life in a voice that sounds like she's possessed by Satan himself, ask her if something is wrong? There were real possibilities here to expand on the ideas An American Werewolf in London had, but An American Werewolf in Paris doesn't even have any characters as interesting as David Naughton's, Jenny Agutter's or Griffin Dunne's. Everyone in this film is an idiot, saying and doing things that will inevitably lead to horrible death, unless of course they are lucky enough to be the main characters, in which case they will survive everything and live happily ever after, not because they are smart, brave or "in love", but because this film needs a happy ending to satisfy all the idiot teenagers who are the target demographic. The effects here are awful too. These werewolves look more like gorillas than a cross between a man and a wolf. This is a film that is begging to be remade/re-imagined in the vein of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Incredible Hulk, Star Trek etc.
*one note: The Dumb Blonde character wasn't bad. Her plan could have actually worked. I liked that.
