Review of An American Werewolf in London (1981) by Tibor B — 27 Nov 2009
Fun 80s horror film which is given a sly wit from director John Landis, who also wrote the script and was clearly aware that sometimes horror works best with a few laughs to relieve the tension. Best known for its Rick Baker make-up transformation sequences, which still look freakily impressive today.
The rest of the film has a few shaky moments, and is never really scary, but the black humour is laced with some genuine sympathy, such as when David sees the undead corpses of his werewolf victims or Agutter's impassioned declaration at the finale.
