Review of An American Werewolf in London (1981) by Dylan N — 19 Mar 2011
30 years later: I have finally seen this frigging movie. Don't know how it kept eluding me; it's kind of a werewolf, nay, a horror staple. I can't believe a movie from 1981 had effects this damn good! It had to have been the goriest movie for the time (since My Bloody Valentine wasn't released uncut till it's dvd release).
Praise for blood and violence aside, the story telling is lackluster but it's essentially a more comedic, modernized take on The Wolfman. Though the hilarity doesn't kick in for a while, it does yield some serious laugh out loud moments. You really can tell that the director of Animal House has a hand in it.
The only major gripe to speak of is the sudden, practically nonexistant ending. For as cool as the rest of the film is, it's rather uninspired and makes the viewer wish that maybe there's an alternate ending to be found somewhere. Alas, at least we'll always have Paris? Blech!
