Review of An American Werewolf in London (1981) by Adam K — 13 Mar 2014
While certainly not scary, and not especially funny, and, for that matter the plot is rather weak, American Werewolf in London is one of those charmed works of art to achieve genius in aspects that only filmmakers seem able to understand.
That's not to say, however, that laypeople can't appreciate them; just not articulate them. David and Jack have an on-screen presence that seems almost naively natural. The pacing slows to focus on moments and experiences that would feel dull and irrelevant if not for their ineffable contribution to the film's wonderful vibe.
It walks a difficult line between run-of-the-mill gallows humor and self-conscious sarcasm on one hand and naïve, frightened moralism on the other, finding some stable and relatively uncharted ground in between them.
