Review of An American Tail (1986) by Michael L — 12 Mar 2009
I'm gonna get a lot of shit for giving this one five stars. Maybe it's my own personal reasons for loving this movie so much. But this story is everything an animated movie should be. Don Bluth is a pioneer in my mind for many reasons.
He can create the most adorable characters, but at the same time draw some of the most fierce, frightening villains. The levels of darkness in all of his films can be a bit much for young viewers. I was pretty shaken the first few times I saw this.
Still, when you think about it, some of the greatest children's stories have that dark element--and ultimate prove to be the best teachers of morals and ethics. This is a story of undying, unconditonal, and dedicated love despite proximity or the trials that separate one from another.
We are reminded that with love, no one is truly separated from the other. There's also subtle messages about cultural separation, as a friendship is cultivated across social lines. It's powerful.
I have shown this to another generation of kids in my family, and hope it will be passed on for more generations. It's not the greatest thing Bluth has done, but it's one of the best. And it's my personal favorite.
