Review of An American Tail (1986) by Brenda S — 22 Jan 2010
It is somewhat crushing to realize that a movie you loved as a child just isn't very good. Such was the case when I watched this recently. The story contains many dark elements that I was most likely unaware of when I was younger.
For a mouse-child, Fievel copes really well with the fact that he is lost. The story sort of plods along - gloomy, depressing, a sudden musical number - with strange 'fade to black' cuts in-between scenes, as if the filmmakers were anticipating a commercial break.
Similar to my experience with "Bedknobs and Broomsticks", I cannot imagine why my 7-year old self would have found this interesting. Probably the pretty colors and cartoon mice.
