Review of An American in Paris (1951) by David S — 23 Aug 2012
The amazing Gene Kelly is fine, but this is no Singing in the Rain. The last 17 minutes, a ballet showing the courtship between Kelly and his love interest, chipmunk cheeked Leslie Caron works, but the various love triangles don't.
What works best is Oscar Levant as Adam, the world's oldest, most acerbic piano prodigy. He looks a little like Peter Lorre, and steals every scene he's in. His fantasy performance as an entire orchestra is jaw dropping; his brilliance at the piano is thrilling.
