Review of An American in Paris (1951) by Lisa C — 05 Jul 2013
A bit overpraised at times and not as timeless as some of Genes other musicals, American in Paris, still has that graceful charm and vivacity that Kelley is known for. It's more the rapport with Kelley and his "gamine" leading lady newcomer Leslie Caron that keeps the love story front and center (barely, since the plot takes tangents on unimportant secondary characters).
At times there are some meandering musical numbers that are not necessary, dragging on the plot a bit too much. It's not an original story and one can see the plot a mile away..but it's the refreshing Paris locale paired with the incomparable Kelly and his screen pairing with Caron, that elevates this otherwise rather spindley written plot.
