Review of An American Crime (2007) by Matthew P — 17 Dec 2008
Haunting, disturbing and completely absorbing are the only words that could be used to describe Tommy O'Haver's chilling "An American Crime". Set in 1960s Indiana, Catherine Keener plays Gertrude, a woman who takes in girls, but brutally disciplines them if they step out of line.
Sylvia, played by Ellen Page, is a prime target for Gertrude's disciplinary actions. Ellen Page is such a wonderful, natural actress and Catherine Keener gives one of the best performances of her career.
It's not an easy film to sit through, but it's definitely a good one.
