Review of An Affair to Remember (1957) by Annemarie B — 16 Mar 2009
Cary Grant, the ultimate movie star, in a sentimental, romantic flick that requires a box of Kleenex. There are so many things I love about this movie. That the leads (Cary and the lovely, graceful Deborah Kerr) fall in love but decide to give it 6 months to straighten out their existing relationships is actually sensible! I love the lines that Cary drops, in particular when Deborah Kerr asks in earnest, "What makes life so difficult?" and Cary responds "People.
" I love the visit to the grandmother and the tenderness between her and Cary. I love how proud Deborah is even though she is in a wheelchair, and I love how Cary figures it all out and runs through the apartment looking for his painting of her in his grandmother's lace.
By then I am a complete river of tears, but in a good way. The 1950's fashion and decorating are a fun touch, and though I wouldn't have thought it, Cary and Deborah have a nice screen chemistry.
Watch it!!
