Review of An Affair of the Heart (2012) by Philip S — 29 Apr 2012
A documentary about 80s pop idol Rick Springfield of "Jessie's Girl" and General Hospital fame currently playing at HotDocs. Is it a puff piece? Sure. Aimed at fans? I'd say so. Would others enjoy it? Well, my wife did and she basically knew nothing about Springfield.
The film is more about the rabid fans who follow him across the country, it seems, and their stories of how Springfield's music affected their lives. Some of these stories are quite moving. Might any pop idol have had the same effect on other lives? Probably, but Springfield seems to take more interest in his fans than the average star, and the film certainly plays up this relationship.
In the end, the film is enjoyable and seems to convey a positive message. As a fan, I enjoyed it.
