Review of Amsterdam (2022) by Jluis_001 — 09 Oct 2022
Regardless of my expectations, I think the most troubling thing about Amsterdam, and one that leaves its director in a very bad light, is how a film with such a great cast feels so pointless and lacking in spark, wit and functionality.
Amsterdam never gets off the ground, and this is caused by David O. Russell's inability to get the plot going and he completely squanders his huge cast, because even with what they achieve in terms of convincing performances, it's all washed away by the ineffectiveness of the material they're given to work with.
It's not that I say they didn't believe in the material. The material wasn't up to their potential.
It's not the calamity that a certain part of the public and the press were talking about, at least it wasn't in my opinion, but I do consider it a totally misguided product on O. Russell's part.
