Review of Amour (2012) by Ben B — 03 Feb 2013
Exquisitely directed and beautifully filmed, Austrian director Michael Haneke's French drama is an emotionally devastating portrait of love staring in the face of death. Never has a film been so cathartic by being so quiet and unflinching.
Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva (nominated for Best Actress) are heartbreaking together as Georges and Anne, a couple in their eighties whose bond is tested when Anne becomes ill and Georges is left to care for her.
Also nominated for Best Foreign Film, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture, the film ranks among the best films nominated this year, and shouldn't go amiss by pure cinephiles.
