Review of Amour (2012) by Sue R — 15 Feb 2013

Amour could have been a great film. Delicate feelings in a very crude situation. But unfortunately this tenderness is abruptly broken by the climax. After that, even the title is questionable, not due to moral issues, but as a film per se. Of course there is a great amount of love in this couple's story (and history), but Georges's deep resignation can easily be mistaken by disregard, not as in "negligence" but as a little bit of indiference, since there isn't an imagetic proof of mourning, of sadness, of humanity. He is rock-solid from beginning to end. This could only be the director's fault since the acting is pretty flawless.

Maybe it is my Hollywood background fed by dramatic romantic and sometimes cheap, movies, or my own romantic/idealistic essence, but I missed some clichés. I wish the emotions, in some point, had broken through Georges's tough being. He could've cried, or something. And also for the [SPOILER] pillow scene, I really believe that it should've been done more gently. Again I'm not referring to morals, but images. It could have been beautifully done, but instead it was so violent that felt as something completely apart from that whole film I was watching. And it wasn't a good shock, just a distasteful one.
