Review of Amour (2012) by Andrew D — 23 Aug 2013
Michael Haneke's films are compelling but frustrating. I love his static, clinical style but hate his excruciatingly slow pacing. Emmanuelle Riva is fantastic, and there are plenty of effective moments in the film.
But too many mundane scenes should've been trimmed or eliminated. At least it doesn't end in the same ambiguous way as The White Ribbon or Cache. Critics gush over his films but the only one I can say I enjoy is Funny Games.
They're all pretentious, but Funny Games has momentum.
